Update to the latest Sun Java version

It is important that you always use the latest Java version. An old Java version or having more than one installed can cause severe problems, like 100% CPU usage etc.!

The latest official and supported version is Java 5.0 Update 15.

Windows 2000/XP

Determine Java version

  1. Click on 'Start' and 'Run...', enter cmd /k java -version and hit OK to find out which JRE is currently installed
  2. If your version is not the latest Java 5.0 Update 15 get it from http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/download.jsp

Install/Update Java

  1. Get the latest Java version from http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/download.jsp
  2. Select Download JRE 5.0 Update 15
  3. Read the license agreement and accept it (you must accept it to continue)
  4. Click on Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language
  5. Make sure Phex is not running
  6. Uninstall every Java version you may find in Start->Settings->Control panel->Add/remove Programs
  7. Reboot your PC (please don't skip this step!)
  8. Install the latest Java JRE you just downloaded.

Linux

debian stable - sun-java5-jre [non-free]
Hope your linux distribution has the "jre" or "jre-sun" or "java-sun" or similar package in its repositories, and install java in the manner supported by your distribution.

If you run the command java in a terminal, and get lots of usage directions instead of just "command not found" then you have java installed.

To check what version of java you have, run the command java -version in a terminal, the reported version should be at least 1.5.0

Mac OS X

You normally have a working version, even though the implementation from apple does things differently at times.
