Download and install Phex

After downloading Phex, you have to install it.

In Windows Phex gets installed after you doubleclick it. Maybe you'll have to get a recent Java Runtime to get running.

In MacOSX just download it and doubleclick the file (If Safari is set to open safe files automatically, you might even be able to skip this second step, but it really shouldn't be (or would you put the button to open your bedroom-windows on the outside wall of your house?)). Afterwards you need to copy the unzipped Program to any place you want it to be. Just start it then.

If you utilize a GNU/Linux, you need to have a Java Runtime and run the phex.jar file.

Sometimes things get between your Phex and the network, for example a firewall or a router, which doesn’t allow calls from your network. Should that happen, you’ll have to lend it a hand.

Set download directory

On the first start, you should set the directory to save downloaded files. Go to Settings>Options on the menu. Choose Download/Sharing Settings>Directories from the options on the left of the screen. Click the "Set Folder" buttons on the right to select folders on your local drive where you want downloaded files to be saved.

Run a search

To search for files: Select the Search tab. Type keywords where it says "Enter your search term here:". As files are found, they will be shown at the center of the screen. Using the "Filter results" section, you can filter your search results based on key words and file type, such as audio.

Download

Select a file you think you want, right-click on it, and select "Download"*. Switch to the Download tab, which will show information on the file you chose to download, including % completion. Click on the file in the top section, and view the status in the lower section. Not all files will be available for download. You may have to go back to the search screen and choose another file.

Once a download is completed ( top section % column = 100 ), the file(s) will show up in the "Completed" direcory you selected in Settings>Options.

*Remember to respect copyright laws when you download and share files. And be careful what you download, as files can contain malicious software such as viruses, adware, spyware, etc.
