In case you have problems connecting to the Gnutella network or receive incoming connections (the status bar icon on the left always shows a wall in front of the globe), a firewall might block your access to Gnutella.

To be able to connect to the network you have to configure your firewall to open a port for incoming and outgoing connections.
Depending on the firewall you use it might pop up when you first run Phex and will ask, if you like to allow 'javaw.exe' to access the Internet? You should choose 'Yes'. Please allow both TCP and UDP connections and incoming and outgoing directions for an optimal use.

You can find detailed instructions for many popular firewalls on this site http://firewalling.com/routers.htm.

To configure port forwarding on an external router you will find help for almost any available router on this site http://www.portforward.com.
